Perinatal nurses play a key role in caring for women who have “at risk” pregnancies. They must be knowledgeable about screening for risk factors, providing preventative management and intervening appropriately when concerns and problems develop.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the pathophysiology of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and interventions/therapies to treat this complication.
  • Define preterm rupture of membranes, premature rupture of membranes, and prolonged rupture of membranes and the diagnosis and treatment for all.
  • Describe definition, diagnosis, treatment, and management of the woman with preterm labor.
  • Describe common surgical complications in pregnancy, including trauma, and the treatment modalities.
  • Using the algorithm in “Placement of Obstetrical Patients,” outline a collaborative plan of care for assessment of pregnant women in the E.D.
