Conversational Medical Spanish I

This course was developed for patient-care providers and others with very little or no knowledge of the Spanish language. Participants will hear and practice basic pronunciation, acquire some basic Spanish vocabulary and begin to converse in the language. Emphasis will also be placed on comprehension. Begin to understand patients’ most frequently asked questions, and how to form responses. Small-group work will focus on introducing oneself, orienting new patients, and asking routine questions.
- Pronounce clearly Spanish letters, basic words and phrases used at bedside.
- Communicate with clarity simple directions and basic information in Spanish about healthcare issues.
- Comprehend some Spanish spoken by patients or family members.
- Appreciate cultural issues that are important to the Latino patient.
- Understand hospital language-access policy.
