The presentation will focus on the impact of caregiver / parental addiction to alcohol and other drugs on children / youth. Current statistics and research will be presented as well as strategies, techniques and games to engage children and parents in the healing process. A list of resources will be distributed and time given for questions and answers.
Presentation Objectives:
- Increase awareness of impact of addiction on young children of alcoholics/addicts.
- Increase knowledge of current statistics related to COA’s (incidence, risk factors, etc.)
- Increase knowledge of resources for COA’s.
- Increase understanding of resiliency and protective factor research
- Increase awareness of activities that engage and educate COA’s as well as recovering parents.
- Increase knowledge of resources for COA’s and recovering parents.
A panel of experts will make presentations on their specializations and be available for questions during lunch.
Pam Newton received her Masters Degree in Human Relations and Communications from Abilene Christian University. In 1982, Ms. Newton shifted her focus to the Addictions field and became Director of one of the first adolescent addiction treatment programs in the nation. Currently she is the Manager of the Betty Ford Center five Star Kids Program where she has served since 1998. Ms. Newton serves on a number of commissions, advisory boards and coalitions and is a frequent trainer on issues related to children and addiction.
Elizabeth Devine received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Howard Payne University, and her Masters of Education Counseling from the University of North Texas. Ms. Devine’s experience has been built out of her positions as a Battering Intervention and Prevention Program Counselor, a Children’s Counselor and through her own Private Practice. Since 2005 she has held the position as Clinical Coordinator at the Betty Ford Center Five Star Kids Program. Ms. Devine has been a successful presenter throughout the state of Texas.
