Cottage Hospitals Garner Three Awards for Patient Satisfaction

November 2007
At the VHA West Coast Leadership Conference in Berkeley in November 2007, four out of 106 member hospitals in six western states were recognized for superior patient satisfaction—and three of those four were Cottage hospitals. And only one hospital in the West Coast received the highest award for patient satisfaction— Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital.

VHA is a national healthcare alliance of more than 1,400 hospitals, and its West Coast region includes a total of 106 hospitals in six states. California has 80 hospitals that are members of VHA. The VHA West Coast Performance Awards program recognizes hospitals for  performance improvement activities in several categories.

Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital won “top performer” award in patient satisfaction for scores that placed it in the top one percent among other peer hospitals by achieving the 99th percentile for inpatients and 94th percentile ranking for the Emergency Department in 2007.

Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital was recognized for being in the top 25 percent in patient satisfaction scores among peer hospitals. It was awarded a certificate of recognition for improving patient satisfaction in the Emergency Department from the 46th percentile in June 2007 to the 76th percentile in June 2007.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital won two awards. The first was a certificate of recognition for patient satisfaction for inpatients by improving from the 42nd percentile in June 2006 to the 87th percentile ranking in June 2007. The hospital ranked in the top 20 percent overall in patient satisfaction scores among peer hospitals.

The second was a certificate of recognition for clinical performance improvement for Acute Myocardial Infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia care. Ten different performance indicators improved between 10 percent and 60 percent from January 2006 to June 2007.

“The VHA awards are the result of the hard work and compassion of our employees and their dedicated focus on patients each and every day,” said Ron Werft, president and chief executive officer of Cottage Health System. “It’s truly an honor to be recognized by VHA for the incredible work performed by the dedicated staff at Cottage.”

Cottage Health System, a nonprofit organization, is the parent organization of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and its associated Cottage Children’s Hospital, Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital.
