Millions of Americans may be letting asthma take their breath away and many don't even know it. To help adults and children find out if asthma might be the cause of their chronic coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, local allergists and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital are offering free asthma screenings from on Saturday, May 9 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
Asthma, a chronic inflammation of the lungs' airways, affects an estimated 20 million Americans and is one of the leading causes of work and school absences. In addition, asthma is responsible for approximately 4,500 deaths each year. Although the exact cause of asthma is unknown, many treatment options are available to control this chronic inflammation of airways in the lungs and related symptoms. Although there is no cure for asthma, the disease still can be controlled, and both adults and children can live healthy, active lives. Anyone who has breathing problems or thinks his or her asthma could be better managed, should attend the free screening.
The screening is being held at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Burtness Auditorium on the first floor; participants can enter from Castillo Street.
