Trauma and Surgery Research

Clinical Trials

The Trauma and Surgery Research Dept. has conducted over 20 clinical trials since the year 2000. Specialty areas include: critical care (anemia, deep vein thrombosis, sepsis, sedation), surgery (post-operative ileus), trauma, infection (hospital acquired pneumonia), and pain management. Five severe sepsis clinical trials have been conducted, including efficacy and safety studies with drotecogin alfa in the year 2003.

The team of three RN study coordinators work closely with other study personnel, including the principal investigator Kenneth Waxman, MD, research pharmacists, surgery residents, trauma nurses, trauma registry, surgeons, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The study coordinator’s role as the patient advocate is key to their successful implementation of innovative clinical trials in the inpatient hospital setting. The staff are dedicated to the promotion of research for the benefit of patients now and in the future.
