2011 Highlights

Completed construction on Phase 4 of the new Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (SBCH), received Certificate of Occupancy from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), and underwent intensive transition planning, staff training and comprehensive preparation for the long-awaited February 12, 2012, transfer of patients and staff.

In partnership with California State University Channel Islands, prepared to host the local area’s first cohort of 22 Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at new quarters on Hollister Avenue. The program began on January 23, 2012.

In spring of 2011, smoothly transitioned patients and staff to the new patient wing and radiology suite (now with digital mammography) completed at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. SYVCH was the first Cottage hospital to install the well-received patient lift system.

Held a topping out ceremony on July 27 at GVCH, where steady progress continues to be made on the new all-private room hospital, with completion and patient move-in scheduled for early 2014. Also received City of Goleta Planning Commission approval for a new medical office building on the Hollister/Patterson site.

Continued to receive awards and recognition for healing outcomes at GVCH’s Center for Wound Management, while increasing service to the Central Coast through its expanded clinic at SYVCH.

Received re-designation as a Center of Excellence from the Surgical Review Corporation for the Bariatric surgery program at SBCH.

Moved into the newly completed Pacific Diagnostic Laboratories (PDL) core lab on South Patterson Avenue and continued to develop an effective outreach program for its 17 satellite draw stations.

Completed work on a collection of model homes at Bella Riviera, previewed the professional homes to employees and prepared to launch a community-wide preview of the market-rate units in January 2012. Continued work toward an early 2013 phased completion of the stunning 115-home development of professional and traditional townhomes.

Made significant progress on core quality measures (heart failure, pneumonia, acute myocardial infarction, surgical infection and complication prevention). Sixteen of 17 measures are at or above 93% compliance with the evidence-based practices. Five are at or above 98% compliance (i.e. a Superior rating for the California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Taskforce public report card). Overall infection rates (now posted on our public website) are well below the national average.

Patient satisfaction rates exceeded the 75th percentile ranking at SBCH for Outpatient Surgery and Behavioral Health and at SYVCH for Inpatient, ED and Outpatient Surgery.

Once again exceeded the previous year’s participation and dollar amount during our United Way employee drive, with more than $175,000 raised and a 10% increase in participation—an all-time high for Cottage.

Provided community grant funding for nine local programs focusing on the areas of childhood obesity, dental, and older adults.
