Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is a winner in the 2011 CalRecycle Waste Reduction Award Program (WRAP) and is one of only 20 health services in California who received this honor.

Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital's imaging services and the Breast Care Center have received accreditation from the American College of Radiology for CT, Mammography, and Stereotatic imaging. Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital has qualified to receive the CHART "Certificate of Excellence" for July 2010. This means the hospital staff has achieved above average or superior scores in 5 of the 8 measure sets (or >62.5% of the measure sets for which it qualifies) used to determine eligibility for the Certificate. GVCH has also not received a "below average" or "poor" score on any CHART measure; chose to report all CHART measure sets for which it qualifies; and scored in at least 4 of the 8 measure sets.
This Certificate is based on the August 2010 CalHospitalCompare.org update.
A CHART hospital has to have at least 1 “Superior” or “Above Average” score in at least 5 of 8 measures sets - ICU Mortality, Heart Failure, CABG Mortality, Breastfeeding, Overall Patient Experience, Patient Safety (HAPU or SCIP), AMI (Quality or Preventive Care), Pneumonia (Quality or Preventive Care).
The Center for Wound Management has won the Robert A. Warriner, M.D. Center of Excellence Award. The award is given to Centers that have maintained 95% Patient Satisfaction, days to heal less than 35 and Healing outcomes greater than 89% for a two year period. We are one of 30 Centers in the country that have received this award and the Center of Distinction Award (see below).
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital's Center for Wound Management is the recipient of the Center of Distinction Award presented by Diversified Clinical Services in recognition of outstanding clinical and patient satisfaction results for twelve consecutive months.
The Center for Wound Management was compared to 263 other centers across the country and was the only California facility to receive this distinction. The physicians and staff of the Wound Care Center significantly exceeded the benchmarks in all areas for each of the past 12 consecutive months.
During this period of time, the Center has performed more than 5,500 wound treatments, 1,700 hyperbaric treatments, and has seen more than 2,200 patients. See full press release here >>
SBCH Awarded Advanced Stroke Certification
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital announced that its Neuroscience Institute has earned an Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers from the Joint Commission (JC), a leading healthcare accreditation agency. Read full press release here >>.
The Surgical Review Corporation has designated Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery program a Center of Excellence, certifying that the program and surgeon Dr. David Thoman meet rigorous industry standards.
The Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Endoscopy Lab was awarded the American Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Award for Excellence in April 2009. The Lab is one of the first in the nation to receive this prestigious designation which honors units committed to the highest standards of safety and quality.

Cottage Health System has been named a recipient of the 2007/08 Consumer Choice Award - Quality and Image Profile by the National Research Corporation.
Consumer Choice Award winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the annual NRC Healthcare Market Guide study.
National Research Corporation (NRC) publicly recognizes the nation's top hospitals with Consumer Choice Awards. The award identifies those hospitals which healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in over 250 markets throughout the U.S. This is the 13th year NRC has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them for providing quality healthcare services.
The results are a roll up of four quality and image questions: Best Overall Quality, Best Image and Reputation, Best Doctors, and Best Nurses.
Fit-Friendly Achievement
Employee Excellence
Cottage has been awarded the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Company Gold Achievement designation for 2008. The program recognizes employers that champion the health of their employees and work to create a culture of physical activity in the workplace. The program recognizes and rewards companies for progressive leadership and for making the health and wellness of their staff a priority. It is also meant to encourage other companies to participate and demonstrate similar physical activity practices for their employees.
Cottage is the first company in Santa Barbara County to receive this distinction and not only will we will be recognized locally, but nationally -- our name was listed in the October 2008 issue of Forbes magazine.
Beacon Awards
Excellence in Clinical Care
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital's Critical Care and Intensive Care units received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence two years in a row: 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. Only 75 hospitals nationwide have earned this distinction; it is the fourth hospital in California -- and the only one in the state to be awarded it twice. The award recognizes critical care units that demonstrate high quality standards through exceptional care of patients and their families and offer a creative, supportive and healthy work environment for employees and the medical staff.
Excellence in Clinical Care
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital was awarded the VHA Clinical Performance Improvement Certificate of Recognition for notable improvement in Heart Failure, Heart Attack, and Pneumonia in 2007. See press release here >>.
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital's Subacute Unit earned the Hospital Services for Continuing Care Best Practices Award its innovative project called “Work in Pairs,” which resulted in significant reduction in staff injuries.
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital was recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for exemplary organ donation practices. The hospital's organ donation efforts have consistently exceeded national benchmarks for lives saved per donor and number of donations.
Patient Satisfaction
Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital received a VHA West Coast Patient Satisfaction Breakthrough award trophy for being a “top performer” in patient satisfaction by achieving the 99th percentile for inpatients and 94th percentile ranking for Emergency Department patients in 2007.
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital received a VHA West Coast Patient Satisfaction Breakthrough Certificate of Recognition for improving patient satisfaction for Emergency Department patients to the 76th percentile in 2007. See press release here >>.

Employee Excellence
Hospital Heroes
Susan San Marco,RN, Clinical Manager of the Center for Wound Management, received a Hospital Hero Award from the National Health Foundation. For the past four years Susan has devoted her energy and talent to developing a comprehensive wound care center serving patients in the greater Santa Barbara community.
Jan Ingram, RN, Manager of Parish Nursing and the Liberty Tattoo Removal Program, was recognized as a Hospital Hero by the National Health Foundation. At its second annual awards luncheon held in Los Angeles, Jan was selected as one of six recipients from 50 nominees in six counties. Under her dedicated leadership, the Parish Nursing and Liberty Tattoo Removal Programs have provided vital healthcare services in the greater Santa Barbara area through established partnerships with over 40 community-based organizations and local businesses. Both programs previously operated through the St. Francis Medical Center and are currently funded by the St. Francis Foundation.
