Enterostomal Therapy
Enterostomal therapy focuses on the acute and rehabilitative care of patients with abdominal stomas, draining wounds, fistulae, dermal tissue trauma, and urinary incontinence.
ET Nurses:
- identify patients at risk for dermal ulcers and recommend preventive measures
- monitor skin care
- provide staff education on procedures related to wounds, ostomy, and continence
- provide pre- and post-operative teaching, counseling, and site selection for patients with ostomies
- provide post-operative skin and stoma assessment and management
- select and provide instruction on appropriate pouching techniques
- counsel on the dietary, sexual, and vocational needs of ostomy patients
- assist with the development of bowel training programs for patients experiencing incontinence
- provide patient instruction in intermittent self-catheterization
- provide urodynamics assessment to diagnose urinary tract problems
